The 39th edition of London Wine Fair is coming to Olympia on 20-22 May 2019.

Featuring over 14,000 wines from 32 countries, innovative tastings, critical masterclasses and a host of outstanding features, the show is an unmissable destination for anyone in the industry.

It's the classic, "Tough job but someone has to do it", but in the spirit of "Daring Grapely" we're heading down to spend a couple of days exploring wines from all over the world, searching for gems to add to our current range of different and very interesting wines offering great quality
and fabulous value that cannot be had from the High St.

Naturally, we'll be seeking even more great value wines from South Africa, however, we're about great wines, not just great Cape wines and this year in particular we'll be checking out wines from regions that we've tried recently and think will appeal to the palates of our discerning customers.

We'll be reporting on tasting Masterclasses on The Wines of Georgia and The Wines of Greece, two regions which are (thankfully) currently overlooked, mainly due to the widespread use of indigenous grapes ( rather than ubiquitous 'standards' ) to make very interesting geographically expressive wines for folks who like different tastes.

Meanwhile.....the Spring Bank Holiday is looming into sight, so check out our Spring Whites, Reds, Roses and of course Sparklies below and order up something different for the weekend.

Wines for Spring 2019

Spring Whites

This Spring our carefully selected range of whites include several examples of "the next big thing in wine" - Chenin Blanc ( see the side panel). These come from two of our new favourite vineyards, Rainbow's End and Asara, both in the premium wine district of Stellenbosch. We also have several examples of 'time served' favourites, such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay - both wooded and non wooded. Even more interesting, to Stephen's taste, is the growth in plantings of Semillon throughout South Africa's Cape Winelands. We have a particularly special example from Glenwood in Franschhoek, a vineyard that we have known and trusted for well over a decade now, where DP Burger produces some fabulous Chardonnay and equally exciting and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc and is now making his aged Semillon more widely available. White wines to suit all tastes, let us know what your preferences are and we'll pull together wines to suit.

Spring Reds

As with our Spring Whites, the Spring Reds come from several very interesting vineyards in the Cape. Again we're keen to ensure there are favourites - Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot. However there are many more interesting wines made from less well known but nonetheless top of the range red grape varieties. Pinotage, South Africa's own grape, Cabernet Franc ( see side panel) and Malbec, both of which are creating reputations as single varietal wines outside of their more familiar home of Bordeaux. Red Wines to suit all tastes, again, drop us a note of the types of flavours you like and we'll pull together a suitable selection.

PRICES? - A case of 12 Spring Whites or 12 Spring Reds, or a mixed Case will cost around £140 - £150, depending on the make up of the case. Whatever the composition however, rest assured, a case of similar quality from the High St or Supermarkets would set you back nearer to £ 175/£180. ( Smaller quantity cases can be avaialble.)

Spring Bubbles

Sparkling wine at anytime is a must. We are always extremely proud to offer an unparalleled collection of Methode Cap Classique (MCC) Sparklers which brings the quality of Champagne at quite literally, half the price, letting you really celebrate without breaking the bank.

We have a full selection from the prestigious Pierre Jourdan cellars at Clos Cabriere in Franschhoek. Two of the most popular bubblies from this range, the Brut NV and Belle Rose, superbly demonstrating that you do not need to pay Champagne prices to get that sort of quality.

This year we are really pleased and excited to be able to add an exceptional MCC to our range. Le Lude MCC 2012 takes things to a new level. For those who know Champagne ( and those who don't), this wine has Grande Marque characteristics and quality, for a fraction of the cost, £30 per bottle. A genuine 'snip.'

Spring Roses

Something lighter but still with vibrant fruit flavours. No loss of quality to be found here just because the wine is a Rose.

From two of our favourite vineyards, Rainbow's End in Stellenbosch and La Couronne in Franschhoek, two of the Cape's most prestigious wine districts. The wines represent two slightly different styles of Rose wine, as might be guessed by the difference in colours.

La Couronne is made from one grape variety, Merlot and is a lighter style. It has aromas of both strawberry and 'turkish delight' and is fruity and refreshing to taste.

The Rainbow's End is fuller, richer, but not in any way too heavy. It's made from juice from several red varieties, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz, Malbec, all of which combine to provide intensely fruity aromas of red fruits and some tropical fruits. Like the La Couronne, it is fruity and refreshing to drink, perhaps with more flavours to savour and slightly crisper too.

Finally, for now, a case for quaffing

The best way to learn more about wine, is to drink more wine.....

We'd love to encourage you to learn lots more about wine, especially about our 'thinking' range of wines.

However, there are times, when you just want to kick back and open a bottle of 'something nice and easy' without too much thought. For that, there's our quaffing range from Orange River. Offering tremendous quality and value compared to similar priced wines on the High St and in supermarkets, the Orange River range provides reliable, flavoursome, 'very easy' to drink wines, at 'budget' prices. Great for cracking open a bottle and 'hang the expense' ( because there's not much). A quaffing case will cost around £8 per bottle, ie £96.

So, if you're looking for something different, without risk, this weekend, drop us a note and we'll put together a selection of wines that we're sure you'll find both interesting and highly enjoyable.

A bit about us and our love of wine

TheWineschool is about teaching folks to enjoy wine and we provide wine mainly from South Africa, to show folks that there's great wine to be had, by trying something different, without breaking the bank. We've got lots of great wines to choose from, for many different occasions, be it a Special Meal, a Special Occasion, a Weekend Wine or an 'Everyday' Wine for quaffing. So many different moments and tastes to please.

We get lots of fun making up wine selections for our family and friends. We love talking all things wine, so contact Jan or Stephen either by messenger ,whatsapp, email or by phone and together we can select wines that we're sure you'll both enjoy and find interestingly different. ( And some you'll find comfortingly familiar!)

The rest of the website is *quite a bit out of date ( *quite a bit = VERY) , altho' Stephen is working feverishly to update the important parts - however that's not to say that there's not lots of good information to be had about wine. Feel free to 'browse' but do remember the caveat, that the whole thing needs redone.
